Different Types of Systems
We can separate them into 2 basic styles.
Package Units: usually go on the roof or at ground level.
Split Systems: These 2 piece systems have a unit outside, (usually on the ground at the side of a house) and another part located either in a hallway closet, in the garage or even hanging sideways in the attic.
There are 3 main ways in which the units can be powered and run. This applies to both style of units.
- Heat Pump.
This is an air conditioner that essentially runs backwards in hte winter to make heat. This is usually the best choice in Arizona, at least in the valley. They are usually more efficient that other methods above 45 degrees. this makes them a good choice in the valley. - Straight cool with resistance heat.
This is like the heat pump (and looks identical outwardly in most cases) but it is not able to run backwards to make heat. Instead it uses heat strips, (like an oven burner or a electric space heater) to make heat. This has 3 advantages, one is that the main part of the air conditioner, (compressor and outside fan) don't run in the winter, theoretically increasing the units lifespan, and two it is the least costly to buy and three it gives you good heat when you need it most. - Gas/electric.
This is an air conditioner like above, but instead of heat strips, is has a gas furnace. This is capable of providing the highest amount of heat.
